Outdoor Educator Course
Education, Risk Management, and Leadership
This course was a comprehensive 55-day crash course in the outdoor skills necessary for sea kayaking, and backpacking expeditions. Alongside these tangible expeditionary skills, this course focused on refining the leadership and educational skills necessary to lead meaningful outdoor experiences.
Course Take-Aways
Refined Leadership Skills
Through shared and solo leadership days, I received feedback on my leadership skills and style multiple times throughout the 55 days. At the end of the program, I was chosen as the Course Director to plan a week-long rock climbing program.
Teaching Experience
Learned multiple lesson planning styles and theories to teach socio-emotional lessons and practical skills in the back country.
Group Expeditionary Living
I learned the theories of group development, including Tuckman's model of forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. Additionally I learned hard skills like trip planing, outdoor navigating, back country living skills and thematic planning.
